The Air Force and Air Mobility Command have purchased a variety of online services/databases and electronic periodical subscriptions for Charleston AFB library patrons. As a result, the Base Library is able to provide access to over 50,000 electronic periodicals and newspaper subscriptions through 13 different databases. These resources are acceptable for use in research papers, and equal to their printed counterparts. Usage of these databases is highly recommended for all students seeking reputable resources for research.
Our goal is to provide you access to the best information absolutely possible. All too often there is a common misconception when completing research that everything is available on the Internet. And while there are many free, reputable sources available, there are some important exceptions. Reputable journals and newspapers, such as The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, and Aviation Week & Space Technology, are all for-profit organizations. They have a vested interest in protecting their intellectual and copyright properties in regard to their journals. What this means to the average researcher is that looking on the Internet for journal articles is usually a fruitless effort. To fill this gap, companies have purchased the rights to electronically reproduce journals, and then sell access rights to libraries and other organizations.
Login is required for all of these databases. Please inquire at the Circulation desk for login information or call 843-963-3320 for more information.
For additional information about these databases and access please refer to our Electronic Resources Page
Library staff is available to assist you in using these databases. If you require more in-depth assistance or instruction please set up an appointment with the Librarian.
CAFB Library has ten public use computers. These computers are signed out on a first come, first served basis and there is a limit of one hour if others are waiting.
All computers are connected to a network printer for your convenience. Patrons are allowed to print 10 free pages each week.
Our public computers provide access to the Internet; all of our Online Databases and to commonly used computer programs like the Microsoft Office Suite. Library staff is available to assist you with Internet searching. If you require more in-depth assistance please set up an appointment with the Librarian. Library staff is available to help with general questions regarding the use of Microsoft Office products.
Charleston AFB Library is a computer “hotspot” for wireless-ready laptop work and surfing the web from a patron’s personal computer. Some service providers charge for this convenience; it’s free at the Library. Just show up with your wireless-ready laptop, equipped with a network card, find yourself a seat anywhere in the building, and go to work! In the event that you are unable to obtain the print materials to study for your test, you can take practice tests online at WWW.PETERSONS.COM/AIRFORCE for the five general CLEP tests. Register at the site and then enter out library code: FL4418.
Subject bibliographies can be helpful when you are researching a particular subject because they often bring together resources from different types of print and electronic resources. Visit our Bibliographies page for links to subject bibliographies created by our Library staff, as well as the Librarians at the Air University Library and others.
